Spherical Spinning, Touches, and Floor-wraps for Poi

13
Year:
2015

Oh those planes are so comfy and familiar...let's embark into another world! this workshop will cover spherical spinning as a utility, especially for flow, with techniques for comfortable plane bending. We'll look at a recent development called 'touches' where the poi tangle, but don't. And we'll adventure on the floor plane through all the body spaces, while bouncing the poi heads on our body! Whew!

Instructor:

Intro to Pendulums

21
Year:
2015

We often get so caught up in poi spinning that we never stop to think about the more gentle movements available to us. Pendulums are just that, a softer, more controlled movement with poi. If you don't know how to do pendulums or would like more ways to use them, this class will help you slow it all down to find the many places we can add this fun and easy idea into our poi spinning.

Instructor:

Intro to Flowers

21
Year:
2015

If you've been spinning for a bit and want to grow your ability to create visually stunning flowers with your poi movement, this class is for you. Even if you know how to do a few flowers, you're guaranteed to learn more here. This class will cover inspin and antispin flowers, wall plane and wheel plane flowers, how timing and direction influences all of this, and more.

Instructor:

Intro to Tracing

21
Year:
2015

This is the ultimate upgrade to any poi style. Not only is tracing fun to do and beautiful to watch, it's also a fantastic way to clean up body and poi movement, add grace to your step and flow, and generally deepen the relationship you have with your poi. We will cover the basics of what tracing is, the fundamental hand paths which make up our tracing framework, how timing and direction changes (or DOESN'T change) how all this works, and then we'll learn a few moves to play with that will get us tracing.

Instructor:

Intro to Poi

Year:
2015

Whether you've never picked up a poi or you're approaching your first year or two of spinning, chances are high that you'll learn a lot from this class. We will cover the fundamental movements which open up our poi spinning, and go over key concepts like timing and direction, weaves, moving on different planes of space, and more.

Partner Poi Fundamentals: Getting Started

17
Year:
2015

This class will introduce the three basic areas of partner poi: sharing space, sharing patterns, and sharing space and patterns. We will briefly cover the first two, with a focus on how to use basic ideas to create and explore your own moves. The bulk of the class will be spent on the last area, which is also known as interlocking partner poi. We cover basic partner 3-beat and 4-beat, as well as partner chase-the-sun. No partner experience necessary, though basic solo poi is helpful. Bring a partner or find one here!

we will explore some 1 and 2 poi toss sequences, starting with basic throws.

Instructor:

Sticky Hybrids

10
Year:
2015

It’s easy to get stuck with hybrids by focusing on juxtaposing patterns, but more interesting things happen when we start to think of them as consisting of relationships between hands and poi. This class will cover many of the hand-to-poi related tricks I demonstrated in my “Comborific” video, incorporating elements of pendulums, CAPs, point isolations, and weird stuff I don’t think there’s even a name for yet. Beware: this is a master-level class on antibrids. I’m going to be covering some VERY advanced stuff.

Polyrhythmic

3
Year:
2015

This is my personal take on some polyrhythmic tricks that I have discovered, mainly working with 2 petal inspin vs 4 pedal antispin motions. Working in wall, wheel, floor and ceiling planes. Within teaching these moves I will also be discussing new ways to look at "the box", the basic 9x9 grid that most spinners work on. I have been working heavily recently on being able to independently work each hand or prop so you can move them wherever you'd like while still working within your pattern base.

Instructor:

This course will introduce a few of my favorite sticky hybrids and is tailored to people who may not be familiar with them. We’ll cover pendulum vs CAP, pendulum vs triquetra, and cateye vs isolation.

This class will cover stalling your Poi, a fundamental concept that can aid in switching the spinning direction of your poi helping transition from trick to trick.

We will discuss the 90 degree rule and how the motion of the hand in relation to the direction of the Poi can improve how clean a stall will look.

Up stalls, Down stalls and Side stalls will be studied using one hand at a time and incorporating a pendulum approach for drilling the various stalling directions.

Ultimately we will work towards how to combine various stalls with both hands in different timing and directions.

Advanced Poi Tangles: Ollies and Beyond

18
Year:
2015

Tangles are the only subset of movements that are specific and exclusive to poi. All other movements are either borrowed from other prop disciplines (juggling, contact poi, etc) or applications of concepts that are shared with other props (flowers, CAPs, reels, etc). This workshop will start with the basic tangle movements: the air wrap, the hyperloop, and the butterfly tangle. From here we will explore ways to maintain a tangle between the poi tethers, and perform tangle maneuvers that integrate into broader frameworks. Familiarity with basic tangles is recommended.

The CAP vs Pendulum hybrid, constructed of a static pendulum with one poi and a downward-oriented CAP with the other, is a nexus from which a spinner can seamlessly access a wide variety of other hybrids. The illusion of "connecting" the head of one poi to the hand that is spinning the other is an extremely deep performance technique, and virtually any pattern that involves this illusion allows access to CAP vs Pendulum, and vice versa.

I also would like to cover linear extension vs wibbles and anti-spin vs wibbles if time permits.

Free Range Poi

7
Year:
2015

This is a workshop for people of any skill level or interest in Poi manipulation. In the Free Range Poi workshop, there will be no restrictions or restraints for the ideas, styles and concepts that we cover in the session. If our group is small, we can work on similar concepts all together but if there is a wide range of interest or skill level, we will organize separate sections to work on multiple custom workshops at the same time. This seems to be the most productive workshop style that I teach.
